India in Sri Lanka, 2008/09
Sri Lanka Won Last ODI By 68-runs, India Win Series
08-Feb-2009 17:50:00 IST

Colombo: Sri Lanka win by 68 runs and bag a consolation win. A thorough all-round performance, first set up by Dilshan and Sangakkara. A change of tactic, asking Sangakkara to stand up to the stumps, put the pressure on the Indians straightaway as two wickets fell to thin edges. The biggest gain for India was Jadeja, who scored a solid fifty.

Chasing a mammoth victory target of 321 runs, India were bowled out for 252 runs in 48.5 overs. The end came when Ishant Sharma (4) was clean bowled by Farveez Maharoof.

Apart from half-centuries by Yuvraj Singh (73), captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (53) and debutant Ravindra Jadeja (60 not out), none of the Indian batsmen applied themselves at the crease and there were hardly any significant partnerships in the Indian innings

Debutant Ravindra Jadeja slammed maiden ODI fifty as India struggled to keep Sri Lanka away from victory in the fifth ODI at Colombo.

Earlier, SL's Skipper won the toss first time in the series, and decided to bat first. Tillakaratne Dilshan played the anchor, and Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya constructed aggressive innings around him, to lead Sri Lanka to a formidable total in their bid to avoid their first 5-0 series whitewash.

Sri Lanka failed to dominate through the entire innings and finished with 320 for 8, after they looked like getting much more. They were restricted by smart bowling from Ishant Sharma and alert in-fielding, and four wickets fell in the space of five balls during the last ten overs.

Brief Score: Sri Lanka 320 for 8 (Dilshan 97, Sangakkara 84) beat India 252 (Yuvraj 73, Jadeja 60*, Dhoni 53) by 68 runs.
