India v Australia, 4th ODI, Mohali
Sachin Misses 17,000-run Mark Again, by Umpire's Mistake
02-Nov-2009 17:28:00 GMT

Mohali: Sachin Tendulkar's wait to reach the 17,000-run mark in One-dayers continued on Monday as he missed the milestone by just seven runs after getting dismissed for 40 in the fourth ODI against Australia.

As the packed PCA Stadium waited in anticipation for the 36-year-old to score the requisite runs, they were left disappointed when Aussie spinner Nathan Hauritz trapped him leg-before in the 19th over.

TV replays showed the ball was missing the leg stump but umpire Ashoka De Silva thought otherwise and raised his finger much to the dismay of the packed crowd.

The Indian batting legend, who has 44 One-day hundreds to his credit, will now have to wait until the fifth match on Thursday in Hyderabad to make another attempt at reaching the milestone.

Tendulkar's innings on Monday, which came off 68 balls, was a mix of caution and aggression during which he hit six fours.

The diminutive Mumbaikar, who made his ODI debut Pakistan in 1989, is already way ahead of his contemporaries when it comes to accumulating runs.

Tendulkar's pile of runs now stands at 16,993 at an average of over 44. He has 91 ODI fifties under his belt.

Rated as the world's best batsman after Australian legend Sir Donald Bradman, Tendulkar has an awe-inspiring Test record. In the whopping 159 matches that he has played, Tendulkar has scored 12,773 runs at an average of 54.58.

The veteran batsman has scored 42 hundreds and 53 half centuries in the longer format of the game.
