New Zealand v West Indies Forth ODI Abondoned Due To Rain
10-Jan-2009 12:51:00 IST

Auckland: The fourth One-Day International between New Zealand and West Indies at Eden Park, Auckland was abandoned because of rain. Chasing 276 to win West Indies were 64-0 in 10.3 overs when rain halted play. Skipper Chris Gayle was not out on 46.

Earlier, An unbeaten century from debutant Martin Guptill has helped New Zealand set a formidable target in the fourth ODI against West Indies in Auckland. The visitors will have to chase 276, set up largely due to Guptill's 122, which is the highest score by a New Zealand batsman on debut, beating Stephen Fleming's 90. Guptill faced 135 deliveries and hit eight fours and two sixes.

He helped put on 68 with Brendon McCullum (26) for the opening wicket, 144 with Ross Taylor (75) for the third wicket and an unbroken 56 with fellow debutant Neil Broom (24 not out) to push the total past 250.

Guptill was one of four changes to the New Zealand team that won the third match in Wellington on Wednesday to level the series at 1-1.

After the halfway point in the innings, Guptill and Ross Taylor began to dominate the bowling. They put on 144 for the third wicket. Taylor punished anything over-pitched on his way to 74, made off 87 balls.

West Indies won the second game of the five-match series after the opening contest was washed out. Guptill became the first New Zealander, and only the fifth player from any country, to score a hundred in his first ODI.

The record score for a debutant is 148, made by West Indian opener Desmond Haynes against Australia in 1978. Paceman Lionel Baker, one of three changes to the West Indies team, was the best of the bowlers, capturing two wickets for 29 runs in his 10 overs.

Brief Score: New Zealand 275 for 4 (Guptill 122*, Taylor 75) & West Indies 64 for 0 (Chris Gayle 46*, 10.3 Ov).
