New Zealand v Bangladesh, 1st ODI, Napier
Jacob Oram Assault Knocks Bangladesh Out
05-Feb-2010 09:38:00 GMT

Napier: A fearsome assault from Jacob Oram 40-ball 83, and his damaging partnership with Neil Broom, helped New Zealand crush Bangladesh by 146 runs in the first ODI in Napier.

Professional performance by the Kiwis. After electing to bat on a placid track, they started off slowly but then hammered their way to resounding 336/9. Then, NZ came out on the park and looked bleak with the ball in the initial overs, but after the first wicket partnership was broken, they never looked in trouble.

Another disappointing day for Bangladesh as their bowling started well but could not sustain the depth overs pressure while the batting failed yet again.

Jacob Oram (83) and Neil Broom's (71) quickfire record partnership of 123 for the seventh wicket really set the game up for New Zealand after Ingram (69) and Taylor (51) gave their wickets away.

Shahadat and Naeem bowled well at times for Bangladesh but on the whole, their bowlers struggled for consistency.

Bangladesh's batting started with a hiss and a roar with Tamim and Imrul adding 71 for the first wicket, however that was the end of the fireworks and when Tamim fell for 62 with the score at 119, the chase was effectively over.

McKay (two for 40) was promising with the ball on debut but it was Vettori's guile which tore the heart out of the chase with three for 33 and Guptill mopped up the tail with two for seven.

Jacob Oram has been named the man-of-the-match for his clobbering 83 of 40 balls with the bat coupled with a couple of wickets.

New Zealand have carried the momentum from the T20I into this game. They thrashed the visitors in that game and here, after a circumspect start, they tore uopn the hapless Bangladeshi bowlers without any mercy and then did their job with the ball defending their total successfully.

Both the teams now head to Dunedin for the second ODI on Monday, the 8th of February, 2010.

Brief scores
New Zealand:
336 for 9 (Oram 83, Broom 71, Ingram 69, Taylor 51, Shafiul Islam 4-68)
Bangladesh: 190 (Tamim 62, Vettori 3-33)
Results: New Zealand won by 146 runs
MOM: Jacob Oram (NZ)
