24-Jun-2012 17:14:00 GMT

Nottingham: Alex Hales hit 99 as England beat West Indies by seven wickets in the lone Twenty20 international at Trent Bridge.

The Nottinghamshire batsman became the first batsman ever to be dismissed on 99 in international T20 cricket.

Hales was denied England's first ever T20 century when he was bowled by Ravi Rampaul with just four needed to win.

Ravi Bopara made 59 from 43 balls as England chased down 173 with two balls to spare for only their third win in eight T20s against West Indies.

Alex Hales fell one run short of England's first Twenty20 international hundred but his 99, in a record 159-run partnership with Ravi Bopara,

Hales' matchwinning innings overtook Eoin Morgan's unbeaten 85 against South Africa at Johannesburg as England's best in this format and secured his place for the World Twenty20 title defence in Sri Lanka later this year.

Earlier, a middle-order flourish from Dwayne Bravo, with a 34-ball fifty, and Kieron Pollard carried West Indies to a very competitive 172 for 4 in the Twenty20 at Trent Bridge. The pair added 65 in less than five overs to build on Dwayne Smith's 70 as the visitors recovered impressively from early trouble after the loss of Chris Gayle in the third over.
