England in West Indies, 2008/09, 1st ODI
England Beat Windies By One Run By D/L Method
21-Mar-2009 06:57:00 IST

Guyana: West Indies, chasing England's 50-over total of 270 for seven, were offered the chance to go off due to rain and bad light and their Australian coach John Dyson beckoned the batsmen off the field.

The home team, however, were one run short of the Duckworth-Lewis target and with no opportunity to return to the field, England were declared winners with West Indies on 244 for seven from 46.2 overs.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul hit 46 off 30 balls after taking 26 off an over from Steve Harmison, but the end to the match meant it was largely forgotten.

That changed when Ramdin fell to the second ball of the 46th over and the next batsman hadn't even taken guard before the light was offered and the players trooped off.

"We looked at the (Duckworth-Lewis) sheet and it seemed to suggest we were one run ahead," England captain Andrew Strauss told Sky Sports television.

Paul Collingwood has been named Man of the Match for his all rounder performance (69 and 1-37).

Earlier in the day, England batting first made a challenging total of 270, thanks mainly to half centuries from Shah and Collingwood. West Indies chasing 271 for a win started badly, losing Gayle early.

Their innings was put together by a century partnership by Simmons and Sarwan. Chanderpaul also chipped in with a quickfire 46 and also scored 26 runs from one Harmison over in the batting powerplay.

Pollard also contributed with the bat, but his dimissal proved decisive for West Indies in the end when the result was determined using D/L method when it started to rain and the light became too murky.

Brief Score: England 270/7 (Collingwood 69, Shah 62) beat West Indies 244/7 (Simmons 62, Sarwan 57) by 1 run (D/L method).
