Roseau: Matthew Wade's first Test century has put Australia in a commanding position against the West Indies in the third Test in Dominica.

The wicketkeeper, in just his third Test match, added 84 runs on Tuesday to reach 106, helping his side to a first-innings total of 328.

In reply, the West Indies reached 165 for 8 at stumps on day two, with Nathan Lyon the chief destroyer for the visitors.

Australia started Tuesday on 212 for 7 with Wade and Mitchell Starc at the crease.

Starc was run out in just the fifth over for 35 but Wade combined well with Ben Hilfenhaus, adding 102 for the ninth wicket.

Wade scored his century off 143 balls including three sixes but was dismissed soon after, caught by Darren Bravo off the bowling of Shane Shillingford.

Hilfenhaus was knocked over by Shillingford two balls later to give the home side less than two sessions to bat for the day.

The West Indian off spinner was his team's best bowler with 6-119 off 42.5 overs.

The West Indies' innings started terribly with Kraigg Brathwaite caught by Ryan Harris off Hilfenhaus' bowling in just the third over.

Adrian Barath and Kieran Powell put their team back on track with a 61-run partnership but regular wickets throughout Tuesday left the West Indies trailing Australia by 163 runs at the end of play.

The home side have just two wickets in hand with off-spinner Nathan Lyon having taken 3-49 off his 24 overs.

Hilfenhaus, Starc and Harris all claimed one wicket on Tuesday.

Australia lead the three-Test series 1-0 after winning the opening match, while the second Test ended in a draw.
