India v South Africa, 2nd ODI, Gwalior
2nd ODI Shifted From Kanpur to Gwalior
06-Feb-2010 03:33:00 GMT

New Delhi: Kanpur's Green Park Stadium seems to be jinxed as far as the South African cricket team is concerned. The second One-dayer between India and South Africa, which was scheduled to be played there on Feb 24, will now be played in Gwalior, the cricket board (BCCI) said in a release on Friday.

The last time South Africa played there, a Test in 2008, they lost on a pitch that came in for heavy criticism. Match referee Roshan Mahanama had written an adverse report leading to the world body (ICC) warning the Indian board (BCCI). However, this time the shift in venue is not linked to the pitch.

Sources said that this sudden shift has come about due to a request made by Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association's (UPCA) secretary Rajeev Shukla.

Shukla had written to BCCI pointing out that the students gallery at the stadium - which accommodates 20,000 spectators - is in a dilapidated state which would make hosting the match at Green Park dangerous. Besides, President Pratibha Patil is visiting IIT Kanpur on February 23, the day the teams were scheduled to reach Kanpur.
